The Church of Thundridge near Cold Christmas Lane

Paranormal Places
Thundridge Parish Church Ruins 03-03-07 01

The old Thundridge church was demolished in 1853. The tower, however, was left in place. At the time Thundridge was one of the oldest churces  in this part of England.

The new church was dedicated to Saint Mary and All Saints. It was paid for by a Mr Hanbury in 1858 and cost £9,000.

The original burial ground remains which contains a number of ld tomb and mausoleums. One unusual epitaph for Roger Gardiner and his wife reads;

Roger lies here before his hour,
Thus doth the Gardiner lose his flower.

Thundridge is just shy of three miles north of Ware. The river Rib can be seen from tower.

Locals report tales of wichcraft, vandalism and desecration at the church.

Hauntings

The Church – sometimes known as Cold Christmas church – is believed to be haunted.

A common report is of a ghostly grumbling growl that echoes out from the tower. Reports of the noise became so frequent that in January 2009 the local East Herts Herald sent a camera crew and journalist to investigate.

Another famous tale dates back to 1978 when a terrified local woman reported an entire ghost army marching out of the church. Reports say the ghost army let out a blood-curdling roar and marched straight through the poor woman.

Other reports speak of a figure in a black robe that is sometimes seen in burial ground.

I am psychic counsellor & spiritual healer, I have heard lots of stories about cold christmas.
being fairly local, I have known many people to visit this site in the dead of night.
the rumour is that that the old church was built facing the wrong way ? having never visited the site myself I am not sure ! a lot of friends of mine have………

rumours have it, that a person that visited the site, climbed the tower , looking from one of the windows, was shoved hard from the back, as if to be pushed out the window. ( or did ? )

also that there was supposed to be a family of children that were killed there, and many people have heard these children, many have reported taking away the spirit of children with them, like having there legs held & voices of " i'm over here " many have had these voice for days after the visit.
Some also say that they took candles as if to form a spiritual circle, trying to send the unrested spirits back to the light…………but every one you talk to has a different story to tell, but i must say, all are believeible, as there is something very strange about the place.
Dark eerie figures, children crying & calling for help, as well as the ones reported above.

I recently visited the church with my family on the 3rd of January this year. We were horrified when we saw a ghostly figure in the window, that followed us out, and got in our car. The figure disappeared by the time we got in our car, unlike any hitchhiker we'd seen before. We met some of the inbreds that live in this town, and despite the 6 fingers and crooked noses, they're actually quite nice people. I would recommend this as a holiday spot for people visiting the UK.

hi, it is now sunday 8th march 2009, last night 4 of us went up to the old church (tower) at cold christmas. we've been there a few times before, we've seen lights moving around us and heard bangs and had objects thrown. but last night we all held hands and called out in the dark, there were small lights around us, i could feel someone standing next to me breathing on my face. as we called out for someone to touch one of us, my husband jumped back in shock, and we all scrambled out of the tower as fast as we could, he said something had scratched the back of his neck. we rushed back to the car terrified. when reaching the car we discovered there were 2 scratch marks on the back of his neck, about 2 inches long.
Its a really strange place, and so addictive.

hi, went to cold christmas church for the forth time on Friday 27th March.
Wasn,t going to go again after the scratching incident but somehow couldn't keep away. This time we had 7 of us. Had things thrown banging noises growling noises but the scaryest thing was when we all smelt a really strong burning smell. Really freaked us out.
Strangest of all is one of our photos actually shows a small boy looking down from the tower. If i hadn't been there when the photo was taken i wouldn't have believed it was true.
The next day one of our party woke up with burnt hair.
    Weird !!!!!

I have lived within 2mins walk of the said church for a number of years now and have visited the church on many occasions night and day and not once had any kind of supernatural experience and find it hard to believe that all of the above stories are nothing but load of fiction!! yes its an old disused church, yes its in a atrange location but thats it.
what is sad is that people cover it with graffiti and the grounds are not well looked after/protected

I can understand people trhinking that the stories of haunting are made up. I am certain that if i hadn't have experienced stuff for myself and seen things with my own eyes i wouldn't have believed it either.
I have a photo that i cant find any logical explanation for. I also cant explain the scratches onmy brother in laws neck. The noises and bangs could possibly be an animal although thats not very likely and the faling stones could be just coincidence as it is a very old church. I am a sceptic but really cant explain what happened to us.

Me and my friends went to try and find the church last night. We turned onto cold christmas lane and drove until we came to the little village of cold christmas. We couldnt see the church anywhere and asked a local who told us not to go there. We then asked some people onthe roadside and they told us to go down the track until you get to the river and it's just past that. We walked for ages and couldn't see it at all. Can anyone help and tell me where it actually is. I'm really intrigued now and would like to see the old church. Were we close? How long is the river?! thanks

HI Emma. Go down Cold Christmas Lane Pass some houses on your left and continue driving over the dual carriage way until you see some metal gates on your left and a tree trunk. Park up and you will see a footpath follow this till you reach the bottom then turn right to thundridge church. Walk until you see the church tower and cemetry on your left. Good Luck and let us know what happens !!!!!!

I went to the Church for the first time last night with 3 friends, one who had been before.
Was an amazing yet extremely nail-biting experience; seeing the overgrown land surrounding the church and all the headstones scattered randomly definitely added to my fear. As we walked up the staircase I suddenly felt very hot, and although nothing supernatural occured, I definitely felt it was a spooked place. Next time we will stay for longer, as I would like to look around the church more and the headstones, and possibly call out to the spirits. We were all so scared we barely stayed there a few minutes!
Still would recommend it to anyone for a definite thrill – whether skeptical or not, (I am not!) I'm sure anyone would enjoy it. Just stay in a group, and don't tempt fate. Something may just happen,

xxtoriixx – we experienced something very simular to yourselves, I am sensitive to spirits and have experienced alot at Cold Christmas but the scariest was a couple of weeks ago when we were literally chased off by an apparition, my friend also had his eye scratched that night. We were clearly been warned off and I will say that the place IS evil and you should always be very cautious when visiting. I run a paranormal investigation group and have visited many haunted locations across the UK and in Romania and Cold Christmas is one of the worst for a sense of evil.

i went there with a few of my friends last night – 7th June 2009.
It was a great night and an experience ill never forget.
We parked our cars down Old Church lane, becuase there was a shut gate which led to a public footpath. i notice on the maps this is labelled as a road, from our end, it definately wasnt. I would also like to say anyone who wants to get frightened should take this route, as its a good kilometer walking distance to the church itself.
We followed the path which runs along the river past fields and eventually under the motorway itself and continues, but just after the underpass and past the large gates there is a sharp left.
We preceeded to walk down this left turn, I was convinced it was the right way, and i prooved to be correct.

On the way down, it actually began to get really foggy, which only added to the atmosphere. It then started to get ridiculously foggy and began to feel really eary and quiet out. I was with 5 other people so it diddnt really bother us haha. The fog was so bad, we struggled to see within 10 metres infront and behind us. The path is straight and narrow and open, there are no other turnings off from the direction we came so we knew we couldnt really get lost.
After about 10 minutes of slow walking down this path we came to a small wooded area, where the path took another slow left turn around some bushes, again we all knew we had arrived.

Just before we took this pathway me and another of my friend Ross, heard two distinct whistling noises, Ross tried to simply passed them of as birds which i supposed could be explained, they could have been disturbed by torches and noise? or could it have been something else? i mean it was 1.30am on a Sunday Night/ Monday Morning. we thought nothing of it and walked in.
It was soo overgrown compared to video's i have seen in winter, which was a good thing. We saw the gravestones lining to the right of us and took some photographs, by this time everyone was baby stepping becuase the atmosphere was electric. We walked about 15 paces towards the front of the church and everyone stopped. it wasnt a particularly windy night and everything was still, we were having general conversations about where the entrance was etc. we thought the front was boarded up.

Just as we was talking i heard a long deep breath surround my right ear, i looked to another of my friends, Grant, who looked straight back as if to say "what the hell was that?" and we even asked eachother if it was the other. as well as other members of our party (6 in total including myself)
We took another 4 or 5 pictures, and were stopped again by my Ross, who asked if anyone had heard that whistle,
Just as he asked me all froze to a complete stop over a distinct Banging noise, it sounded like something being frown against metal, it was quite loud as we all herd it.
Almost 2 seconds after the first noise, it was followed by a much louder and defined version of the previous noise ( a louder banging sound like something hitting metal)
We wasnt sticking around to hear anymore, and everyone bottled it, myself included, although Grant, Ross and Myself agree'd to go back just to make sure, the other memebers of the group were very spooked and said not to.

I cant really explain what happened, could it have been people? at that time on a sunday night? surely i believe if people were going to scare people. the more social times would be Friday and Saturday Evenings?

Although I live local to Cold Christmas, I've never actually been there… yet! But I have heard a reknowned rumour that unlike christian churches that face a certain way, this church was built backwards and there are 4 others similar to this around the country in the shape of a star if you like. I heard that devil worshipers used to come here and even make sacrifises. Obviously, this may be an urban myth. But anywhere could have spiritual activity, even your own living room. So, what makes Cold Christmas any different? I am intrigued by the place but I am a believer in spiritualism and will not go to cold christmas unless I have protective stones or something similar with me. ____Myself and a group of friends often go on 'ghost hunts'. We have been to Copped Hall in Upshire, Waltham Abbey and there is alot of activity here. Definitely woth looking into. We have also been to a church in Sheering that is also very eerie. But my advice is take a digital camera and you'll be amazed with orbs and shadows that you see in the background.

Last Night 27 Auguest 2009 was the first time i have ever been down to Cold Christmas. i had been Hangman's Hill many of time but have never found anyone else brave enough to come down to Cold Christmas luckily i did last night, me and 8 mates went down there to see what all the fuss was about, i do believe in ghost's and spirits but it doesnt phase me it would take one heck of a ghost to scare me being a huge fan of horror and thriller movies so would love to expierance it first hand, so in the pitch black of night we all walking into the forest from Christmas Lane, 2 people didnt even make it down the lane before getting scared and going back so with my phone light on i lead the group towards the old church, almost at a jogging pace as i could wait to get there. once there i was in ore of the beauty of the place, all shinning our lights at the steeple you could see the 17th centery gothicness of the place, the storys of a devils church and ghost made my adreniline sky rocket as we walked though the overgrow grave yard to the steeple itself, then i was show a hole to get in which was 4 foot high by a foot and a half wide maybe 2. the inside was amazing you could really see how tall it really was and where each floor would have sat on its wooden beams still intacked with the wall, to the right of the entrance was another hole even smaller to the one used to get in but lead to a spiral stair case which can still be walked up all the way to the top. it was a great night for me unlike some of the group who really couldnt wait to leave, before i left i went through the grave yard reading the head stones the oldest one i read dating back to 1809, fitting as i visted an exact 200 years after. it was an experiance i hope anyone reading does go for. HERE COMES THE SCARY PART THOUGH, all the time i was there i was recording everything from walking down the path, the tower itself, the head stones, even evidence in the buildings masonary which would point to it being a sinister church of evil rather then a place to worship, once home i plugged it in to watch the video as i couldnt wait to see how good it came out only to get the message "Unsupported Media File" this was no joke i tried everything possiable to get the file to work but nothing, it seems like what happens at Cold Christmas, stays at Cold Christmas………… if anyone else wants to go do get in touch i plan on going again this time with a night vision camera to see what happens, you can contact me on facebook by searching -> Kieran The-Bear Marajh <-

been up there lots of times. Very scary place my friend has a photo of an orb that when you zoom in on it it is boy or man. You can even see his body he looks like he is crouching down. This was taken the same night we had stuff thrown at us. I would love to know why this church is so active. shame most haunted crew cant go up there i think it needs a professional medium to investigate it.

I went to this church on Saturday with 3 friends, we were just cycling past and thought we'd check it out, the grave stones were very old, 1800's, there was lost of grafitti around the place, loads of litter and empty beer cans, we went inside, there was an empty calor gas bottle and more litter, my friend nearly went up the stairs but decided not to. We had no prior knowledge of this churches history and experienced NO supernatural happenings, the scariest thing was the amount of litter, if there are ghosts there they'd probably appreciate it if all the ghost hunters and satan worshippers took their litter home with them.

went to cold Christmas last Saturday ( 3rd of October 09) and it was really scary! As me and three mates walked towards the church we heard what sounded like drums, we thought it was weird, but we carried on to the tower. We arrived at the tower after nearly walking past it (it was the middle of the night) we all had a look around the grounds and we were disgusted with the state of the place, graffiti, empty gas canisters and completely over grown, such a shame.

Only two of us, one being myself, decided to go inside, as soon as i stepped inside, i felt nothing but coldness and sorrow, we then went up the stairs, we got up to the first window when we decided to turn back because it was pitch black inside and we only had a small torch. My friend handed me the small torch and as we started to walk back down, he let out a yell and asked for the torch back, i handed it to him as he explained that he felt someone breathe in his ear, he frantically looked around, he gave me back the torch and we continued to leave, we got out and were both shaking.

We decided to leave, we got back to the car without incident, but it was the drive home that scared us. As we were heading back home, my friend in the front passenger seat turned round and said what? ( this being the same guy who felt someone breathe in his ear) i didn't understand what had happened but he told me that he felt someone tap on his shoulder, both me and my other friend in the back seat had done nothing, we all just looked at each other for a good few minutes as we carried on driving into the night.

…. and all this on a night when the moon was full….

I have been twice to the Church recently for research into an article for a paranormal magazine. We didn't hear or see anything unusual. Although the first time the mission had to be aborted due to a thunderstorm (I figured standing in a really tall structure wouldn't be very wise). We did hear an odd growling noise but after some further investigation I decided it was probably the sheep noises echoing around in that valley or the noise of a plane going over as it seems to be under the flight path for Stansted airport.
The rest of our experiences are in the next two threads.

One thing we did find in our photographs was a hell of a lot of dust orbs. And that is all it was, dust. Be especially careful of this if you go up the stairs becuase there is 150 years wrth of the stuff just waiting to be kicked up, photographed and called paranormal activity. Also it makes the stairs really slippy on the way down which isn't helpful in the pitch blackness. Be aware of small flying things living in there too. Plus my boyfriend is certain he saw a bat going home to roost up there.

Some unusual things we did find were some specs in the one of our photographs that did seem to be emitting its own light rather than a reflection although we took this from the window at the top of the staircase so I am not ruling out it wasn't just a relection off of some of the debris on the floor in there.

Secondly we found what appeared to be a face looking out at us from one of the little slit windows at the top in one of the photos. I am convinced this is a case of matixing (for those of you who don't know, this is when we see faces etc. in images when really it is just a bunch of random shadows or the light shining at just the right angle making us see something that isn't really there) however, it would be interesting to see if anyone else has photographs of that particular window. It is the slit one that is on the same side as the entrance. Wee took the photograph from the ajoining field.

Another thing we experienced was total battery drainage at the top of the staircase. Camera just completely died. Then, once we had left the tower, it turned itself back on again. The theory is that paranormal activity can drain batteries as they need an energy source to help manifest themselves.

    The place is certainly interesting.

If anyone has more of its factual history, I would love to hear from you!

The church doesnt face the wrong way, its is just the last remaing part of the church, the east tower! There is a lot of history on the net u can read up on about the church but here is a very brief version! __It isn't cold crismas church it is thundridge church! As years went by the village had to progress to the A10 for trading, access and travel reasons. ( To any one whom has had half an education will know that this makes a lot more sence than the other rumours, ie it was haunted by romans)__The grave stones mainly read the same sir names and similar dates, that is because families would be burried next to each other (if there is limited space then put on top of each other like in a big town or city) Over the years a lot of the stones have been stolen or broken which is why it only seems like a few familys are there.

The dates are similar because at this time a bad flu or illness could take a few out at once! So when u look everthing about this place is very normal. The people of the village wont speak about the place because the stupid rituals people have tried there, hacking up goats etc!! Its a real nice place i sat in there and read the telegraph on my own from midnight to 3 am using a single candle to prove it wasnt haunted, however please when listening to peoples stories they allways start with drink, drugs, or an over active imagination
