The meaning of flowers

There are very many superstitions and beliefs surrounding flowers, their meanings and  properties.  This post looks at only a few.

Clover

It is widely believed that finding a four-leafed clover brings good luck. If the finder hands the clover on to someone else than, it is sometimes said, that luck is further enhanced.

Daffodil

Daffodils should always be taken and given in bunches as it is thought to be unlucky to pluck just a single flower.

Daisy

It is the daisy which brings the tradition of; “He loves me, he loves me not”. Girls can discover what their sweethearts are realy feeling byt plucking the daisy’s petals and alternating the chant.

Dandelion

Dandelions can also be used to determine if someone loves you; blow the seeds from the seed-head away, one puff at a time and between each puff say alternatively; “He loves me, he loves me not”.

Gorse

It is unlucky to have gorse bush flowers in the house.

Heather

White heather is said to be lucky but is considered even better to grow your own than buy it.

Lilac

White lilac flowers are unlucky and should not be carried inside.

Marigold

It is said that picking marigolds that you have grown yourself will encourage you to become a drunkard.

May

May blossom is considered unlucky if it is brought into the house.

Orange blossom

Orange blossom is connected to fertility and is considered lucky to have at a wedding.

Pansies

Picking pansies in the sunny is believed to increase the chances of it raining

Poppies

Some believe that staring into the centre of a poppy can cause a temporary loss of vision. Poppies are considered to be very unlucky and should therefore never be taken into the house.

Snowdrops

Snowdrops are related to spring and new life but despite this it is considered unlucky to have them in the house. It is considered particularly unlucky to have snowdrops in the house with a sick person.
