Tasty goodness: Burnt Sugar

Burnt Sugar is the company behind “the world’s best judge” (as awarded by the Observer).

Burnt Sugar is a Fair Trade company. This means that all the sugar in their fudges comes from farms in West Kenya where the farmers directly benefit from all their hardwork.

The West Kenya farming co-operative (WEKO) has over 19,000 farmers, each with a tiny piece of land and who each get preferential prices on some of their sugar for projects like schools and clinics. Burnt Sugar’s Justine, the founder, made the trip to Kenya to visit WEKO herself.

It isn’t just Fair Trade and carbon issues that Burnt Sugar pays attention to. The company pays attention to the quality. As their website explains they avoid chemicals like sulphur dioxide that’s commonly placed in traditional commerical sugar.
