Burnt Sugar is the company behind “the world’s best judge” (as awarded by the Observer).
Burnt Sugar is a Fair Trade company. This means that all the sugar in their fudges comes from farms in West Kenya where the farmers directly benefit from all their hardwork.
The West Kenya farming co-operative (WEKO) has over 19,000 farmers, each with a tiny piece of land and who each get preferential prices on some of their sugar for projects like schools and clinics. Burnt Sugar’s Justine, the founder, made the trip to Kenya to visit WEKO herself.
In addtion Burnt Surgar is a Carbon Zero company. Any carbon produced by the WEKO farms, importing the sugar or trucking their products around is counter balanced by carbon reduction efforts spearheaded by
It isn’t just Fair Trade and carbon issues that Burnt Sugar pays attention to. The company pays attention to the quality. As their website explains they avoid chemicals like sulphur dioxide that’s commonly placed in traditional commerical sugar.
That’s why In Pure Spirit thinks Burnt Sugar is tasty goodness – their fudge tastes good and their ethics are good.
Burnt Sugar’s website doesn’t sell their fudge but orders can be placed via ethical retailers like Ethical Superstore*.

Isn’t it good to see companies making tasty treats like this but also making every effort to look after the less well off and the world? It means we can enjoy the sweets without feeling guilty. Are there any similar companies that you would recommend?

Thanks for visiting In Pure Spirit. Where you in Kenya to check out suppliers? What are the conditions that you saw like?

I've just come back from a trip to Kenya, including Western Province where the only sugar company I saw was Mumias. Back in the UK, I was given some Burnt Sugar crumbly fudge -fantastic! – and really wish I'd known about WEKO co-operative before my trip as I'd have asked around about it.
Great product, keep up the good work
