Niddry Street Vaults, Edinburgh
The Niddry Street Vaults are one set of vaults uncovered in Edinburgh, Scotland. Niddry Street is halfway between North Bridge and South Bridge and is perpendicular to the Cow Gate. Mary King’s Close is nearby.
The Edinburgh Vaults were created when the Bridges were built to link the Southside to the Old Town in 1785. Due to persistent flooding problems, however, most of the vaults were abandoned in 1795.
Norrie Rowan began the excavation of the Niddry Street Vaults in 1995.
Hauntings
The Niddry Street Vaults are most famous for a photograph of what appears to be a ghostly skeleton.
Visitors to Niddry Street Vaults often report witnessing the form of a cobbler working and watching in the corner of one of the vaults. Another vault seems to house a spirit which possesses ill intent towards women.
Reports of sudden chills and skin irritation are common.
